How do I know if my late periods are the start of menopause or something else?

Normally, my periods are always on time, give or take a day. But the last two months have been 4-5 days late, and I've been getting more emotional and higher hormones for longer days of PMS. Could this be a sign of menopause when I'm only 40 years old?
