PCOS has many layers and can be a challenge, but it is possible to achieve hormonal balance. Step one is to do very thorough research. The fact that you posted here suggests that you are on the right track. Next, find a physician that understands PCOS and is attentive to your needs. Depending on where you are with insulin resistance, you may be prescribed meds (often metformin is used, sometimes in conjunction with Spirinolactone. If you prefer more 'natural' alternatives it may be helpful to see an a physician that practices 'integrative medicine' or a naturopath (N.D.). I have found that exercise and reducing processed carbohydrates helps exponentially. Take it one day at a time, and we'll be here to cheer you on.

Hi Anon,
According to research, Vitex itself has none of the hormonal building blocks that many of the medicinal plants used for the reproductive system contain. Instead, this herb nourishes and supports the endocrine system to find its own balance. Before starting on any kind of herb, it might be good to talk to your doctor first.
Best,
Daisy

I can't find information about how much, if at all, vitex changes hormone levels, can you point me in that direction? I have heard a lot about maca doing this and one products seems to get a lot of attention in PCOS circles is Femmenessence.

Hi Anon,
Welcome to EmpowHER. One of the reasons Vitex is so effective for women who are not ovulating due to PCOS, is because of its ability to balance hormones while not containing hormones itself. Vitex supports hormonal balance in the body by having an effect on the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis, correcting the problem at the source.
Evening Primrose Oil helps to increase cervical mucous and metabolic function. Use in addition to the flax or cod liver oils.
I've included a link on PCOS, I hope this helps
