over the past 6 months i've noticed that I'm shedding a lot of hair. When I've brushed my hair, there are usually a lot of hairs left on the brush. If i've just taken a shower, and I pull my hair, I get about 20 strands of hair in one pull. is that normal?
I've been going through a stress-full period the past 2-3 months, but I can't see how that has affected my hair, since i've noticed the shedding 6 months ago.
I always wear my hair in a ponytail or a bun, and I'm wondering if this has something to do with it? I can't really say if i'm shedding more hair than before, since I haven't payed much attention to shedding untill 6 months ago.
I'm scared that I might be losing hair to the point that I'll eventually be bald.
What can I do to stop shedding that much?

Hi boggus,
January 5, 2011 - 9:32amThank you for your question and for finding EmpowHER.
It can be unsettling when you think you're losing more hair than usual. If you are concerned, talk with your doctor. In the meantime, here is an article about the different types of hair loss, and possible causes: Understanding Hair Loss In Women
It is a good idea to keep track of the amount of hair you are losing so you can clearly explain to a doctor your symptoms. A person-to-person suggestion (because I'm not a doctor, just a fellow woman tying to help): try cleaning your brush each day for a week, and see how much comes out each day when you normally brush (ex., after you shower). Could it be your hair products causing problems? Has the texture of your hair changed? When's the last time your hair was treated at a salon? Are you on any medications, or experienced any other changes in lifestyle (eating, exercise, health, supplements, etc.) in the past 6 months? Regardless, if it seems you're losing more than 100-150 hairs each day (according to the attached article link) you definitely may have a problem that needs to be treated.
Good luck and let us know what you find out.
