Have You Lost Weight and Regained It?

Who doesn't have a story about working hard to lose weight? Skipping desserts, exercising like a dog, whatever -- only to have that weight sneak back up on you six months later?

Well, the good news is that a chemical called leptin, "a hormone secreted by fat cells may be behind the gain."

"When humans (and rodents) lose 10 percent or more of their body weight, leptin falls rapidly and sets off a cascade of physiological changes that act to put weight back on. Skeletal muscles work more efficiently, thyroid and other hormones are reduced — all so the body burns 15 percent to 20 percent fewer calories, enough to put back 25 pounds or more a year."

Have you ever lost and gained weight? What did you do about it? Did you give it another try?

I did...I finally got my butt up and off to the gym 5 days a week for about a 45 minute workout...it was easy to stick to; the gym was 3 minutes away from our office, I could change at the office, go to the gym, work out and come back to the office and change again...never interupting my kids or husbands day! I had lost over 40 pounds and had toned my body - I HAD NEVER BEEN IN SUCH GOOD SHAPE - I kept it for almost 2 years.

Then we moved to Utah - it was TOO cold to walk out across a large parking lot, drive 15 minutes down the road, workout and get back all within an hours lunch...hence the weight began to come back on, then I broke my foot (near amputation) and was laid up on our couch for 6 months - that was the beginning of the end - I lost muscle mass and gained weight.

Almost a year after the break, I am now trying to lose weight again, but don't have the aggresive attitude I once had. I have changed my diet due to other health issues and have tried to get on my elliptical at home in the evenings. I don't have the ability to lift weights at home (no equipment) but am trying to do situps & pushups and stretches...it is a slower process but I have lost 10 pounds in the past 3-4 weeks (mainly because of the dietary changes).
