Has anyone tried the Ester-C pills to boost your Vitamin C and hinder an oncoming cold?

Products have come-and-gone that promise to help us either stop a cold before it hits, shorten its span, or lessen its symptoms.

Has anyone tried the Ester-C pills?

Have they been shown to be effective in helping with a cold, in any of the three ways I mentioned above?

thanks!

Hello Free2Bme (great name!) I have many friends who swear by Ester-C. From what I understand, it's a different form of vitamin C that has a neutral pH value of 7. In other words, it's not acidic like traditional types of vitamin C and so it shouldn't cause diarrhea and stomach upset in larger amounts. I think it's also more potent and may stay in your system longer. I think Ester-C has been on the market now for quite some time, so I think it's here to stay rather than be just a "flavor of the month" supplement.

Alison B and alysiak are correct in saying that vitamin C, in no matter what form you take it, has been shown to help strengthen the immune system and ward off colds and infections, so I think it could help with all three things you mention.

Have you taken any other natural remedies? I personally think this cold and flu season has been especially nasty--do you feel a cold coming on right now? I hope you are well, best in health, M

I have tried Ester-C; but, I wasn't consistent enough with it to notice a difference. I do take Vitamin C, though, to ward off seasonal colds.

I have not tried the Ester-C pill, but have read that loading up on Vitamin C (as much as 500-1,000 mg) may have a protective effect against infections. Be aware, though, that "loading up" on anything may also have side effects, for instance, Vitamin C in large quantities can wreak havoc on your digestive system and cause diarrhea.
