Q:

Is an Elliptical better than a Treadmill?

I know a lot of people who workout on a treadmill which is great. However, I have also heard that an elliptical machine is better because it works the body harder and is better as a cardio exercise.

Any tips on this? Anyone prefer one over the other?

i totally agree with miscortes. I have tried using ellipticals before but after I had a long work out I realised that my knees didn't feel good. The problem is I already do not have good knees to begin with. Anyway I have been using an electric treadmill and things have been looking good ever since. If you want you can visit this site which reviews quite a good range of electric treadmill. I am sure you will find a treadmill that you like that. I do feel that it is best to invest in a good electric treadmill.

I have used both ellipticals and treadmills, and personally I prefer the elliptical because of the lower impact. I was a runner for many years and my knees don't need any more pounding! However, I think a lot of it is personal preference. If you like to read while you work out, for instance, a treadmill is going to work better for you because you won't be moving up and down.

Here's a study done for the Journal of Exercise Physiology online. They studied a dozen cardiac rehab patients ages 47-79 to find how they responded, cardio-wise, to the elliptical and to the treadmill. You can read the whole study online if you like, though it's a bit dense. They measured oxygen consumption, heart rate and blood pressure, among other things, during two trials on the treadmill and two on the elliptical. For these patients, the study ended up recommending the elliptical trainer.

If you ask your doctor, though, I imagine that the thing she or he would emphasize is this: Which machine do you like the most? Will that make you exercise more, and more consistently? Then that's the one you should buy!

I used to personally own an elliptical and used it for several months. It has since moved out of my house and I replaced it with a treadmill. Personally, I found that the elliptical hurt my knees. I do not have bad knees either. So I replaced the elliptical with a treadmill and I fell in love.

I did find some information from About.com that gives a little insight about treadmills vs. the ellipticals and you can find that information here http://exercise.about.com/cs/exercisegear/a/treadelliptical.htm.

I guess it mainly depends on your preference but personally, I definitely have a better workout on the treadmill.

I hope this helps.
