does left kidney hydronephrosis affect the right kidney

my son aged 7years has left gross hydro nephrosis and often the left kidney gets swollen and after two days the urine drains and it become normal.does it affect the right kidney

Hi Anon,

Welcome to EmpowHER and thanks for your question.  Hydronephrosis may be unilateral involving just one kidney or bilateral involving both.  The most common reason to have unilateral hydronephrosis is a kidney stone that causes obstruction of the ureter.  Urine will back up and cause the kidney to swell.
