Magnesium am or pm?

I've heard two different opinions on this and I'm wondering what the EmpowHer answer is.... I recently started taking a magnesium supplement (400mg) after the recommendation of our wondrous Coach Virginia due to my RLS issue. And I'm curious to know what time of the day would be most advantageous for me to take it, as far as absorption is concerned, so that I get the most benefit from it. I currently take Omeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor, first thing in the morning due to my GERD. I don't know if this would have any affect on how a supplement is absorbed. In the evening at bedtime, I take Yaz birth control pill. Those are the only meds I take and I take no other supplements. Thanks for any input you might have!

Nobody addressed the first comment and I had the same reaction. I took my magnesium supplement (400mg) before bed and woke up alert and ready to go in the middle of the night. Any advice? Thanks.

I am aware of the many pills we think we need to take to obtain optimal health, that includes pharmaceutical products which now are showing little evidence of effectiveness. We keep forgetting that FOOD is medicine, and I am talking about natural, healhty food like raw vegetables, fresh fruits, no meat, gluten-free. But how many eat like that on a daily basis?

Unfortunately, magnesium is lacking in the modern diet because natural sources (soil) are depleted from this mineral. At a recent medical conference I attended, a lot of attention was given to nutraceuticals (vitamins and supplements) and the consensus was that few people in America eat right and appropiate amounts of essential nutrients from natural sources, so using supplements helps as long as appropriate dosage and good quality product is used. But nothing replaces the value of getting them straight from the source.

Also, many people buy supplements without consulting a health coach or a healthcare provider and end up wasting money. So it is important to work closely with a professional before embarking on a self-directed protocol of nutraceuticals.

Also, at this high level medical conference, we were presented with hard data from studies done which show that maintaining healthy levels of essential minerals, amino-acids and anti-oxidants in our bodies will promote healthier bodies and longevity along with stress reduction and exercise.

One of my favorite mutivitamin products is made by Metagenics. They make a product specifically for women. All their products are also backed by reputable science. If you are interested let me know, I think you can only get them via referral by a healthcare professional. I have my own provider account with them because I recommend their products to clients on my Health/Wellness Coach capacity. Another company that makes really good products and many do not realize is the brand sold at Costco called Nature's Made. They are rated high in quality at a reasonable price. They do carry a multivitamin product, not sure if they have one just for women.

And remember that post-menopausal women should NOT take iron supplements!

My doctors told me to drop iron and take B12 instead, it worked.

I may have asked this before, so please forgive me. Is there a good supplement, or pack of supplements, that contains all the essential vitamins and minerals we women require on a daily basis? It seems impossible to take everything we need to, if we have a half dozen, or more, different tablets to take at different times of day!

My brother-in-law, a pharmacist, recommended I take something like One-A-Day for 50+ women or Centrum Silver.

What do you take?

This is such a good question, I want to second it! I've been so confused because I recently read an article that said that studies show that a multi-vitamin really doesn't do anything for you -- that taking one wasn't any different from taking a placebo.....

Kristin, thanks for the "wondrous" part of your posting, I appreciate it. Here is what I'd suggest in regards to magnesium, since this mineral relaxes the muscles, you are better off getting full advantage of it by taking it at night. Are you taking calcium as well? If so, calcium is better during the day. I take magnesium(the powder version) like a tea right before bedtime. It helps me get a restorative sleep by relaxing my muscles.

In regards to your GERD, as you know I am not a friend of pharmaceutical products. I have a simple recipe known to cure GERD/Acid Reflux. I used to have GERD but since I made changes to my diet and stick to natural approaches, I no longer suffer of this annoying conditions.

2 Teaspoons of Apple Cider Vinegar in water, 3x a day. Take a stronger concoction (i.e., more vinegar, less water) directly after a heavy meal if you are treating acid reflux or GERD.

I have been advised by my acupuncturist and M.D.to take magnesium for my insomnia. Thank you for the confident answer that it is best to take it at night I have also discovered by reading here that I am only taking 63% of the recommended dose so I am going to rectify that as well. I noticed that this site is primarily geared for womaen. Just for the record I am a 58 year old man and got the answers I needed from you on my first hit on the Internet. Many thanks!

Thanks so much for the advice, Virginia! I'll start taking my magnesium at night, along with my birth control, which will make it easier to remember anyway. You know, I used to be really good about taking my calcium, but I've been a slacker lately for some reason. I need to get back into that. I eat so much dairy and drink a lot of milk, so I'm probably okay in that area. I did have a bone density test a couple of years ago and was totally within the normal range. Anyway, thanks for the tip to take calcium during the day!

The only thing about the apple cider vinegar is that I'm so busy at work during the day that I know I would totally forget to take it. I do hate being reliant on pharma products, but I've had really good luck with this particular med. So many people in my family have had esophageal cancer -- one of my uncles had his esophagus completely removed -- that my GERD really terrifies me. I don't want to mess around with my symptoms because I've been in so much pain before that I ended up in the ER. But since I've been on proton pump inhibitors, I've been just fine......
