My doctor put me on Zoloft because I've been depressed and I'm wondering if I should also see a therapist for talk therapy. My doctor said that I'll start feeling better in 2-3 weeks, just with the medication. Has anyone had success with just taking an anti-depressant? Is talk therapy necessary?

talk therapy can help! But consider group therapy led by Dr. I attended a group years ago and it gave me insite into people and their isssues with various mental problems.

I've never been on meds or gone to therapy *yet! ha!* but I would say talk therapy should be first, and medication second! Then perhaps a combination. Talk therapy should never be pushed aside.
I'd like to hear more from others too - is one 'better' than the other or does someone probably need both?

Congrats on taking charge of your health!
I have not used an anti-depressant, but have gone to counseling in various times of my life (mainly during transitions in my life).
I highly recommend "talk therapy" with a really good therapist that you "connect" with! I found that it helped me get through my sadness and gain a new "outsider's" perspective on my life. I also think that you have to believe in therapy to work; if you're not invested in the talk therapy, it may not work well...it's definitely one of those "you get out of it, what you put into it."
