Hello, I was wondering if there are any diabetic women out there who have had children or are currently pregnant? Im 24 and have been diabetic since I was 12, its controlled with insulin injections and my blood sugars are pretty good most of the time. Ive read lots of books about this and although I understand what they are saying but its not the same as actually sitting down and talking to someone who has experienced it or a professional. Its really really worrying me, I keep thinking the worst. Last night I woke up at 3.30am thinking about it and I just couldn't get back to sleep!! If theres anyone out there who can help I'd really appreciate it.

March 9, 2011 - 9:52amThank you for your question and for joining EmpowHER. Diabetes is a serious condition and will put you in the high-risk pregnancy category according to your doctor. However, you are not guaranteed to have those complications associated with diabetes and being pregnant. The key from what I've read comes from having good control of your blood sugars and working closely with your doctor to monitor your condition. If you are planning on getting pregnant, schedule an appointment with your doctor to discuss this and bring a list of questions and concerns. If you don't have an OB/Gyn, now is the time to get one that you are comfortable with.

Hi Christine, thanks for the message. I had a look at the video and it helped a lot. I know my blood sugars are pretty good and I know that when Im pregnant Il do my absolute best to keep them at a near perfect level! I have been to my GP and told him that me and my partner was trying for a baby but he didnt really say much about it at all. Im guessing thats not really a good thing on his part. Obviously im still worried but not as much as I was before. So thank you!!

March 15, 2011 - 10:08amYou may want to search out an Obstetrician you are comfortable with now, unless you plan to work with your GP throughout a possible pregnancy. An Obstetrician is trained to care for the unique needs of a pregnant woman (including diabetes), so it may be a good thing for you, especially if your GP isn't the most communicative (from what you've said).
