Q:

Can you spot bleed days before your actual period starts, or is the spotting considered the start?

I am looking to get pregnant but am having trouble figuring out the actual start day of my last period. My periods are usually light on the first day, but sometimes I spot a few days before the actual flow begins. I'm just curious if the spotting is considered the first day to calculate ovulation from.

I need help. I have been spotting for 2 days now and yet still haven't had my period. This is my first and I'm nerves it is a false alarm. Any ideas? I'm only 11 but I'm maturing fast. I hav been having cramps and mood swings but all I see is little dots. Please help!

Hi Anon,

Spot bleeding is very common when you are starting to get your period. Try not to be concerned about it-- it doesn't sound like a false alarm. For teens, it is also common to experience irregular periods the first couple of years with your cycle.

Here's some more information for you: http://kidshealth.org/teen/sexual_health/girls/menstruation.html

Good luck,

Rosa

women are often unsure of the significance of spotting. They think that the spotting signals the start of their period, and count the spotting as Day 1. Actually, the spotting is pre-menstrual spotting, and should be ignored. Only the start of a proper flow is considered to be Day 1. If they miscalculate, they end up mis-charting their entire cycle, and get frustrated and confused. To make a bad situation worse, they are reluctant to ask their doctor about this, because they feel that this is basic knowledge, which every women should know, and they don't want to ask "stupid " questions.

I'm surprised that not one of you has mentioned the fact that spotting a few days before your period could be a sign of luteal phase defect or hormonal imbalance'. This should def NOT be ignored. -__-

I have a question I was suppose to start my period in 10days time but it seemed to come 10days early and it came lighter than usual could that be a problem or something I shouldn't worry about?

Hey it's me here, the one who started this discussion.
Still not pregnant, my husband is now changing his mind and doesn't want another child. I DO! how are we ever to get past this?
And btw, I had spotting for an entire week before starting my period this month. It's driving me crazy. If I can ever change my husbands mind I will still be completely confused on what is my ovulation day.

I am trying to get pregnant for last 4 months. me and my husband always do intercourse alternate day after my periods upto 1 day after ovulation. I have regular 28 days cycle and 2 months before, ovulation predictor kit shows positive on 14th day of my cycle, then after negative for the rest of the months. I also spots light brown 2 to 4 days before my period from last 2 months and my cervical mucus also disturbed from last 2 months, even this month I had lots of cervical discharge on 10th day and then after there is no discharge at all until today. I am so worried...
what should I do/
