Q:

Can HPV go away on its own?

HPV

I was just diagnosed as being positive for HPV and will have a culposcopy in a few days. I've done some research and have read that once you have HPV that it will never go away. But I asked the nurse at my doctor's office and she said that in some cases, the HPV will just go away and your body will recover on its own. If that's the case, how often does that occur? What are my chances that my HPV will just eventually go away?

first off let me say you're not dirty, its not like guys know or can even find out if they have hpv. in reguards to the bleeding problem i would call you famliy dr & have his/her nurse talk to the dr to see what needs to be done, I've had a couple of these done & only spoted afterwards. but if nothing get's done keep trying to find a dr that will help i no there's nothing you can do over the weekend but i hope for the best for you & to all the ladies on here i wish the best of luck to you too, just remember to get those paps done every year.

Hi, I'm a twenty year old woman and around a year ago I was diagnosed with a high risk strand of HPV. It was probably one of the most terrifying moments in my life. I have by no means slept around or had numerous sexual partners, but neither have I been completely monogomous with just one man. When I was a senior I had a "relationship" with a slightly older man who I recently learned has had many sexual encounters. The only other man I ever had sex with in highschool also seemed to have been around the block a few times; and now since learning that HPV is normally dormant for 12-18 months before it shows up in a PAP, I'm fairly certain one of the two must have been the culprit. Anywho....I've gone throuh the colposcopy; The biopsy was very painful for me, but I had many cancerous cells and the doc had to do three or four bipsies to get all that she wanted. (Had my mom and my best friend inthe room while she did it, kind of uncomfortable). Long story short....after the procedure I was advised to restrain from sex for two weeks or until I no longer felt discomfort. I waited a month and a half and then (and up until very recently) I would have a substantial amount of blood after intercourse. My biopsies came back alright, still cancerous but not in a more advanced stage....My question is; has anyone else experienced the bleeding? It never hurt during sex, at all. Infact the first time it happened me and my partner did not realize it until the next day after we had woken up. I've gone through quite a bit since then; miscarriage(while on the pill), spending three months off birth control and then being put on the shot for two sessions, after my first session my period stopped and did not start back until eight months later, after I was put on four rounds of provera(a hormone pre-menopausal women take to keep their periods), now I have been on my period for almost four months now. I will stop for three days(sometimes) and then it's right back to bleeding. My period has just now turned back to the normal red color it should be, but a lot of the time it's still the murky brown of old blood. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should be doing? The doctor's all seem to think I'm fine, but this does worry me. I'm twenty but one day I want to be married with little babies running around making my life a mess. I'm scared to death that this will inhibit my ability to have children.

Hi twenty-year old woman,
I was just diagnosed with HPV about three days ago and am devastated. I can really relate to what you have described in your post, I am going through it as well. I am twenty-nine years old and never had an STD. I was a virgin all through high school, never slept around, always in monogomous relationships my whole life but unfortunetly have become infected from one of two people I have been with over the past year or so.
I have no idea what kind of HPV I have, since my GYN did not take the time to call and explain this to me. I am so worried and overwhelmed with many questions. I too have had on-going difficuly with my periods but that, I beleive is a result of PCOS (in my case). I too periodically take Provera and its awful. So, believe me, I totally undertand how you feel.
I am scarred to death of everything right now. I'm scared I won't be able to concieve and so terrified to become intimate with anyone ever again.
When you were diagnosed with HPV, was your doctor able to tell you the exact kind you were infected with? I was wondering since I have no idea and hate feeling like this. I've just been so upset these past few days, I feel like all I have been doing is crying. I want to be proactive and take care of myself and found out as much as possible about this so I can have the best possible outcome.
If anyone can answer my question I would really appreciate it. I don't have anyone else I can talk to about this. Thanks, J.

Hello...I just found out about two weeks ago I have HVP and I am 52 so I beyond devasted myself. My doctor told me that the only HVP they can check for in a Pap Smear is the High Risk HVP, so I assume that is the same for all the tests. Especially since they can not detect HVP in men or any other way of checking HVP in women either. I was told it could be dormant for years...so since I have been married twice and have had other relationships I don't know who I got it from. My doctor said that it could go away on its own in a year or so. Meanwhile I am still freakng out. I have OCD..and I am a hypochondriac so it is making my life a living hell!!! My conern is how long has it been dormant???

The HPV virus has been around for decades so it's nothing new. It can also remain dormant for decades. It is likely that the precancerous cells seen back in the 90's were indeed caused by HPV since 99.7% of cervical cancers are attributed to high risk HPV (80% by HPV types 16, 18 and 33). There is no way to know if you husband has been unfaithful as this also may be a reason for exposure to a new strain which resulted in an active infection. However, before you jump to that conclusion communication is the key here. There is no test, per se, for men for HPV which is why most men pass it on unknowingly. Most men also have no symptoms of high risk HPV. If your husband indicates he has been faithful it is not unreasonable that your HPV from that long ago has become reactivated especially if you are over 40. Mine did after 15 years of dormancy. This is indeed a stressful time so please try to cultivate your husband's support if the issue of fidelity is not a concern.

In the early 90's my pap smear came back abnormal. Precancerous cells were seen. I had to have the freezing procedure done. The doctor told me that this was caused by having sex. He never said HPV. I have only ever had sex with my husband. Does this definetly mean he had sex with other partners? The medical records are gone. I tried to get them and I was told they had been destroyed. Is ther anything I can do? I was tested last year for HPV and the test was negative.

hello, i am 19 years of age.. i dont know if anyone will reply to my message... but I recently had my yearly pap done, and everything came out normal. I was very pleased to see my results because about a year ago, i caught clymidia* and had it treated and cleared.. The reason why i am looking for answers here is because I recently had "protected" sex with a guy about a week ago, 3 different times. I had oral sex too with him. The thing that scared me was that when i looked at his penis, he HAD bumps under his shaft close to his balls where i couldnt see, until i preformed oral sex. I didnt think much of it until i noticed a tiny wart thing growing on my pinky finger a few days later. I have never had a wart since i was in the 6th grade. I know this sounds stupid.. but i am really freaked out by this!! The bumps that i seen honestly looked like moles.. but they were raised slightly more than usual, also they were brown in color, a lot like his natural skin. Im very scared, and really dont know what to do. My GYN told me about hvp vaccination.. i'm planning on getting it done.. well, my question is, if i do have "hpv" and caught it early, will vaccination clear it? I am horribly terrified.. please someone help.
