Q:

Can foods that you eat cause goiter?

I used to have a swollen looking neck, even though I wasn't particularly overweight, but recently, I have restricted my diet to mainly lean and green and fresh fruits, and I noticed that the neck swelling is gone, whereas if I "cheat" a little with sweets or carbs, it will increase again. Is it goiter? What's the likely cause? Thanks.

Hi Sharon,

Welcome to EmpowHER. Goiter is mainly caused by the thyroid producing too much or too little hormone or nodules that develops in the gland. Some factors that can cause the thyroid gland to enlarge are lack of iodine in the diet, Graves disease, Hashimoto disease. Also swelling of the lymph nodes is possible, when there's an infection or illness. Hope this was helpful?

Best,

Daisy

Thanks, Daisy. I'll check out the other conditions and keep researching, as I guess probably it's not Goiter, since my thyroid levels came back normal, even back then.
