I certainly understand that you are concerned about your father's recovery especially when he is having pain, sleeplessness and hasn't eaten anything! 

Experiencing pain after surgery is common, however when you mentioned that the pain he is experiencing is keeping him up all night...I definitely think that warrants a call to his doctor. I would call his doctor and explain his pain level on a scale of 1 to 10 and see what the doctor suggests. His doctor can offer a solution to prevent the pain he is experiencing.

You mentioned that his surgery was just one week ago which has his diet restricted to the Phase 1 of recovery.  This phase is better known as the Liquid Diet. You can give him broth, unsweetened juice, milk, cream soup (strained) and sugar free gelatin.

At week two he can move up to Phase 2 or Pureed Foods. 

Seeing that he is a diabetic, I would follow a liquid diet and make choices that will not spike his blood sugar. All diets for this type of surgery should be specific to that of the patient as everyone has a different situation, such as diabetes which shouldn't be taken lightly. 

Did his doctor discuss with him what foods he can eat and what foods he should avoid as he moves through his recovery? I would highly suggest talking with his doctor or a registered dietician to create a specific meal plan that is created specifically for him.

Anon, if it was my Dad I'd give his doctor a call, discuss the pain level and get some clarity on what you can feed him. I hope this helps!
