Q:

Bruised cervix or something else? UTI?

For the last couple of days, I have noticed that my bladder has felt sore whenever I am urinating. I brushed it off as something that would take care of itself, but last night I woke up with the same sort of pain, only very severe. I could barely move. I believe it was because my bladder was full. After I went pee, it mostly subsided.

I am on the fence on whether or not to see a doctor, as urgent care might be my only option. It doesn't have the same burning quality associated with a UTI (I had one in March). Could this be a bruised cervix? 2 days before the pain started, my boyfriend and I were having intercourse, but I eventually had to stop because it was starting to feel sore.

Thanks!

Hi Anon! Thank you for the update! It's good that the urine test came back normal! An ultrasound is definitely the way to go, you'll know what's going on and can know an accurate diagnosis. Let me know when you have the ultrasound and what your doctor diagnoses. I am glad the ibuprofen is helping in the meantime! Keep in touch!!! Kristin August 20, 2014 - 8:42am

The urine tests came back normal. My doctor suggested that the problem could be an ovarian cyst and wants me to have an ultrasound. In the meantime, I am taking ibuprofen for the pain.

It seems to be subsiding a bit, but was particularly bad after work yesterday.

Hi Kristin!

I set up a profile. :)

I heard back about the ultrasound today, and apparently I have a 6 cm ovarian cyst. They referred me to a gynecologist for further treatment. The pain has subsided considerably since it first started.

I am worried because I remember hearing that ovarian cysts can sometimes be cancerous. Would this have showed up on the ultrasound?

Thanks!

Hi Anon!

Thank you for reaching out to the EmpowHER community and sharing your question. Experiencing pain in that general area can be uncomfortable. I definitely don't think this is something you should just put on the back burner.

There are several things that could be happening here. You could have bruised your cervix during sex or you could have interstitial cystitis which is a chronic condition in which the bladder becomes inflamed and irritated. Typically when the bladder is full, the pain is heightened. If your doctor rules out a UTI, then they would check for this condition.

I would schedule a doctors visit where they will do a physical exam and also check your urine for any infections. In the meantime, take some over the counter pain reliever until you can get to the doctor.

I am sure you and your boyfriend want to get back to being intimate and any pain associated with intimacy should be checked out :-)

Here is a great video from the EmpowHER community about interstitial cystitis:

I hope this helps! Please let me know if you go to the doctor or urgent care and let me know what they say. I am sure everything will be just fine and you'll be feeling better soon!
Best,
Kristin

Hi Kristin!

Thank you so much for your reply!

I was able to schedule a doctor appointment for Tuesday, so I'm hoping it doesn't get any worse before then.

I will let you know what happens!
