I have horrible headaches around my period. Am I OK? Do most women get headaches like these? Or am I just one of a lucky few?

My sister gets horrible chronic headaches. she has fainted, vomitted, it's horrible to watch. it turns out she had a cyst in her brain causing her migraines. She is on several medications and they seem to have helped, since she has them a lot less than she use to. It would get a lot worse around her period, too.

Menstrual migraines and headaches are common--but are also signs of a hormonal imbalance. Read more about how to find relief from menstrual migraines: http://www.womentowomen.com/womenshealth/menstrualmigraines.aspx
It might just be a matter of making some diet changes and possibly using certain herbs to keep hormones in better balance!

Did you get some answer why you are having migrain during your period? I too had the same experience. Either before during or after.

ever since i was little i have gotten headaches almost daily. over the years ive learned to just deal with them. ive also been to doctors about this and they tell me to change my diet. i do so, and nothing helps. when i get my period i wake up with a headache that only gets worse as the day progresses and its there for days. these headaches quickly turn into migranes but its a different kind of migrane then im used to. can anyone help?

It sounds like you may need to go to a doctor who will actually run some tests, to see why you have daily headaches. If you follow their suggested advice (changing diet), do you then go back and tell them it didn't work? They need to hear from you--you would need to be more persistent than your post suggests--so they can properly diagnose you.
Do you need help finding a doctor? How old are you?

I never suffered from horrible headaches. I would get a few when my allergies were bad, but other then that it was the end. I was half way through my second year of teaching when I would get these (as I refer to them) lightning headaches! It felt like lightning way hitting a particular part of my brain and I would be horrible for about 24 hours after that. I went to go and see my Dr. who referred me to an infectious disease specialist. The dr eventually sent me to the hospital because they were so bad to do a spinal tap (he thought I had West Nile virus. My fluid was clear so I was sent to a neurologist. By that time I had a constant headache that never went away and lightning headaches on top of that. The Dr told me they were a form of migraines and diagnosed me with EDHS as well. I was put on TOPOMAX as a preventative. I was first started on 25 mgs once a day, it got so bad I was then upped to 100 mgs three times a day. I loved being on that medicine because I could function, but it effected my short term memory as well as left me 35 pounds lighter. I eventually had to get off that pill because my husband and I wanted to ttc and it causes birth defects. That's my story :) don't know if it helps.

I suffer from Everyday headache syndrome and horrible migraines that I was on a pill for epilepsy for. I would get my most horrible migraines right before or during my period and I was told by my dr that it was because of hormones
