Cabbage is a goitrogenic food http://www.womentowomen.com/hypothyroidism/goitrogenicfoods-thyroidhealth.aspx but I've read that steaming or fermenting can reduce the goitrogens. - Jacqueline, Women to Women contributor

Hi jomari,

Cabbage inhibits the production of thyroid hormone, this is known as a goitrogen and can cause goiter. Other foods that can contribute to causing goiter are:
turnips
brussel sprouts
seaweed
millet

If you have goiter, these are foods you probably want to stay away from.
