Hi MissD,
No, an antibiotic is necessary to kill the bacteria and fight the infection. It will not go away on its own. Urethritis should not affect your period or menstrual cycle in any way.

Hello MissD,
Yes, poor hygiene can be to blame. E. coli is a bacteria that can cause inflammation of the urethra and is found in stool. It is very important to wipe yourself from front to back after urinating and having a bowel movement. It is important to wash your labia, rinse and then wash your rectum.

Hello Anonymous,
It sounds like you have urethritis, which is inflammation of the urethra.
It is caused by infection by bacteria that enter the urethra from the skin around the urethra's opening.
Within 48 hours of starting an antibiotics, blood levels of the drug are adequate for healing to begin. Continue to take all of the antibiotics for the prescribed length of time. You should continue to feel better each day. It may take up to 10 days for the symptom of urinary urgency to go away. Once your immune system has removed the infection from your body, your urethra will return to normal.
Anonymous, did your doctor tell you what type of bacteria caused the infection? Knowing the cause can help prevent a recurrence in the future.
