Q:

Is the "5-second" rule really true?

I hear a lot of people say "5 second rule!" as they pick something up from the floor and pop it in their mouth. It means that if something edible spends less than 5 seconds on the floor, it hasn't acquired enough bacteria to warrant being thrown out!

Sounds very iffy to me but a lot of people swear by it!

Any thoughts?

Well, I guess the 5-second rule is truly an old wives tale since if something I am consuming falls into a mud puddle, the 5 second rule doesn't apply. I actually found a website where a study was conducted on the 5 second Rule and it failed. You can find it here http://www.sixwise.com/newsletters/06/03/22/the_5-second_rule_should_you_eat_it_or_not.htm.

I think it is safe to say that if something falls on the floor, throw it away.
