If your period is an exact 28 day cycle then 12 days (mid cycle) before MAY be considered safe for some but unprotected sex could very much lead to pregnancy. It's risky. Not everyone ovulates on day 14 and that's just two days before. Later ovulation is quite possible. The first week (your period) and the last week before your period are the safest options. Week two is not necessarily safe because sperm can live for up to 5 days in a woman's body and early ovulation can result in pregnancy.
If birth control is used 100% of the time, the rhythm method isn't really needed (but it's fine to do so) but the rhythm method only works on it's own if a woman is experienced in it and has a 100% regular cycle.
