It's fine to not use the placebo pills and take birth control pills every day, to avoid periods. You are also covered if you do decide to take a "break" week and then get your period. Your risk of pregnancy, when you take your pills every day, is less than 1%.
I would not worry about being a day late just yet. You can take a test to ease your mind but your breakthrough bleeding should come along within a couple of days. Bear in mind, some women begin to skip periods altogether after about one year of taking birth control pills, even if they take the placebo break every month.
