Complex ovarian cysts are those that contain either blood or a solid substance. Complex cysts are more likely to need treatment than simple cysts. A doctor may recommend surgery when a cyst is becoming too large, interfering with the ovary or other organs, or is painful.
A surgeon will often use laparoscopy to remove an ovarian cyst and/or the ovary if deemed necessary and check for any cancerous cells. Most ovarian cysts are found to be benign, meaning that they are noncancerous. If cancer is found, a hysterectomy would then most likely be recommended.
