Using hormone therapy in women ages 65 and older remains controversial. Data in this population is limited, but some research says that women shouldn’t be starting the therapy after the age of 60.
BHRT can be used to treat women (and men) when their hormone levels drop or become unbalanced. It’s most frequently used to ease symptoms of perimenopause and menopause. It may also be used to improve symptoms of cancer treatment or to treat conditions such as:
insulin resistance
adrenal and thyroid disorders
osteoporosis
fibromyalgia
Bioidentical hormones are manmade hormones derived from plant estrogens which are chemically identical to those the human body produces.
BHRT may be an option for some, however, there are some side effects and risks associated with BHRT that are serious and should discuss this with your doctor. Many women should avoid using any hormone replacement.
