HERWriter Guide

Hello Anon

Thank you for writing and for looking out for your daughter.

Unfortunately we cannot answer this question. Her OB/GYN, who has her medical history, as well as possibly talking to a spine specialist, will need to do an in-depth evaluation to see what the safest form of delivery is.

Some women with a fused spine do give birth naturally, although pushing can be hard, based on their lack of dexterity. A water birth could help with pain and ease of motion but as you said, it isn't likely an epidural can be used.

Ultimately it's your daughters decision but I don't think you'll be considered an interfering mother if you voice your concerns gently. She is soon to know the worries of parenting as well as the joys, and you've had a lot of experience so far. Just make sure she knows you're looking out for her.
Best,
Susan
