Hello Anon

Thank you for your question and welcome to EmpowHER!

A proper examination is needed to know what is happening with your foot, but we can offer some suggestions.

It's possible you were bitten or stung over night and are now dealing with a reaction to that. Check your sleeping arrangements for any sign of insects or bug bites. Examine your foot for markings.

It's possible you had a recent minor injury (even a minor fracture) you were unaware of, and are now seeing side effects.

Swelling means the area is enlarged, generally by an excess of fluid. This can be caused by again, an injury or bite, or could also be an allergic reaction to something.

Ice and elevation can help with the swelling.

A popping sensation could indicate a neuroma - a neuroma is a swelling in the nerve and are seen in the foot a lot of times. An exam and scan may be needed to access this. These neuromas are generally painful but harmless but further study will be needed.

If you don't feel any improvement within a day or two, contact your doctor for an examination appointment.

I hope you get this sorted soon. Please keep us updated!
Best,
Susan
