Low impact activities are best, such as walking, yoga, and stationary bike cycling, these activities are not jarring to your back. I have a degenerative disc in my lower back and was told to trade running for walking. Which I have. Horseback riding is not low impact and can be jarring. Yoga can help with flexibility and stretch out tight, underused muscles. Some people have had success with alternative treatment such as acupuncture. Surgical treatment may be recommended for people with severe nerve damage from injury or nerve compression.

Discuss your situation and treatment options (pain medication/therapy, etc.) with your doctor.
