Aspiration is when something enters the airway or lungs by accident. It may be food, liquid, or some other material. This can cause serious health problems, such as pneumonia. Aspiration can happen when a person has trouble swallowing normally. Most of the time aspiration won’t cause symptoms. You may experience a sudden cough as your lungs try to clear out the fluid/substance. Some people may wheeze, have trouble breathing, or have a hoarse voice after they eat, drink, vomit, or experience heartburn. You may have chronic aspiration if this occurs frequently. See your doctor right away if you suspect this is the case. If someone aspirates while unconscious, turn them on one side. This helps fluids leave the body and lungs and call 911.
