It depends on your doctor. To date, the only antibiotic proven to impact birth control pills is rifampin. This drug is used to treat tuberculosis and other bacterial infections. If you take this medication while using birth control pills, it decreases the hormone levels in your birth control pills. However, if the antibiotics (or the illness) they are treating cause diarrhea or vomiting, absorption of the contraceptive pill may be affected. In that case, a backup birth control method is a good idea. Some doctors will recommend this anyway when prescribing antibiotics just to be on the safe side. Your pharmacist can tell you more.
