Hello Anon

Thank you for writing.

Liver enzymes are special proteins found in the liver, There is not just one but rather four main enzymes. They include aspartate aminotransferase (AST or SGOT) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT or SGPT). These enzymes are normally contained within liver cells. In addition to AST and ALT, alkaline phosphatase, 5' nucleotidase, and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) are other enzymes located in the liver. The normal range of values for AST (SGOT) is from 5 to 40 units per liter of serum (the liquid part of the blood). The normal range of values for ALT (SGPT) is from 7 to 56 units per liter of serum. The ranges of AST and ALT numbers may differ slightly depending on the technique and protocols used by different laboratories. However, normal reference ranges are routinely provided by each laboratory and printed in the report. This applies to both adult males and females.

Your numbers are very high - this could mean liver damage, including hepatitis or diabetes.

Anon, you need to ask your doctor why your levels are so high. You didn't say how much you drink everyday. A couple of glasses of wine won't hurt. But if you are consuming excessive alcohol every day, this could be the cause. And a more vegetarian diet could also help.

Best,
Susan
