From what I could find on this subject, while there are a few studies suggesting that cataract surgery might make AMD (age-related macular degeneration) worse, the largest, most definitive studies indicate that it has no effect. AMD affects the retina, in the back of the eye, but cataracts are a clouding of the lens in the front of the eye that prevents light from reaching the retina. In theory, inflammation associated with cataract surgery could worsen AMD, but the clinical evidence says that it does not. Your eye physician can tell you more.
