As you said, spotting during ovulation is not abnormal and even heavier spotting is not generally of concern. The cause is estrogen versus progesterone at this time in the cycle. But some mid cycle bleeding isn't even connected to ovulation even if the time line is the same. This is why you should mention it to your doctor, especially as you are seeing changes - cysts or fibriods are a possibility.
