Peripheral neuropathy, a result of damage to your peripheral nerves, often causes weakness, numbness, and pain, usually in your hands and feet. It can also affect other areas of your body.  According to Medical News Today, Many types of neuropathy are "idiopathic," or of unknown cause, but a number of conditions can trigger it. Diabetes is the most common cause of chronic peripheral neuropathy. It happens when high blood sugar levels damage the nerves.

Treatment goals are to manage the condition causing your neuropathy and to relieve symptoms.  This may consist of medication,  therapy, and lifestyle changes.
