Thumb arthritis commonly occurs with aging and can include pain, bumps or what one might call a knot. Previous trauma or injury to the thumb joint also can cause thumb arthritis. The damage to the joint might result in the growth of new bone along the sides of the existing bone (bone spurs), which can produce noticeable lumps on your thumb joint. An evaluation by a doctor can is needed to know for sure.
