Yellow or green mucus can sometimes be a sign of infection, but not always. When you have a cold, your immune system sends white blood cells called neutrophils rushing to the area. These cells contain a greenish-colored enzyme, and in large numbers, they can turn the mucus the same color. You can have clear mucus and have an ear or sinus infection. If you do have an infection, you'll likely also have other symptoms such as congestion, fever, pressure in your face and coughing. Often when you have a bacterial infection, you don't feel as if you are getting better and your condition can worsen.
