Over-the-counter pain medicines, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, to help reduce pain during an attack of shingles. Taking cool baths with colloidal oatmeal, or applying calamine lotion or cool, wet compresses to shingles blisters may help relieve the itching and pain.
