Hello and welcome to EmpowHer,
First of all, if the parathyroid gland is producing too much PTH it means you have Hyperparathyroidism. It can occur for many different reasons. There is primary and secondary Hyperparathyroidism. Primary hyperparathyroidism is caused by:
-A noncancerous growth (adenoma) on a gland.
-Enlargement (hyperplasia) of two or more parathyroid glands
-A cancerous (malignant) tumor (very rare)
Secondary Hyperparathyroidism is caused by:
-Kidney failure
-severe calcium deficiency
-severe vitamin D deficiency
You definitely should ask your doctor what caused your hyperthyroidism. The cause will help you decide for yourself if surgery is really necessary or if there is another method of treatment that will work.
Let us know if you have any more questions.
