Hi Ali!

Thank you for sharing your question with the EmpowHER community! I actually am I bad "snorer" myself and it is so embarrassing and I am usually the brunt of snoring jokes!! Even after many years of marriage, I am mortified when my hubby pokes and prods me on about my snoring escapade the night before!

Information from the EmpowHER site notes that snoring happens when air is prevented from moving freely through your nose and mouth during sleep because of a narrowing of the airway, “either from poor sleep posture or abnormalities of the soft tissues in your throat.” (Helpguide.org)

Snoring has actually been linked to genetics, so Ali, there is a chance you could rattle a few roofs at some point in your life. lol

Here are a few tips for your mom to help curb the snoring:

-If you are overweight, lose weight.

-Exercise to improve muscle tone

-Avoid drinking alcohol or taking sedatives.

-Sleep on your side rather than on your back. Try taping a marble or tennis ball to your back before going to bed to prevent rolling onto your back.

-Treat causes of nasal congestion (eg, allergies or colds).

-Raise the head of the bed up about four inches. Use extra pillows or put something under the mattress.

I also included this link that has a lot more detailed information for you about snoring. I hope this helps!

Ali, let me know if these tips help your mom!

Best,

Kristin
