Hi Anon,

Welcome to EmpowHer! Thanks for your question. Paroxysmal Nocturnal Dyspnea (PND) is a respiratory issue, also referred to as cardiac asthma, that is caused by pulmonary edema. Pulmonary edema is a buildup of fluid in the air sacs of the lungs.

The symptoms of PND include shortness of breath and coughing spells that arise suddenly and disturb sleep. Resting in the upright position can often alleviate these symptoms, however PND can be a sign of congestive heart failure and other severe health conditions.  If you are experiencing difficultly breathing, please visit your doctor as soon as possible.

Did that answer your question? Please let us know if you have any other inquiries.

Warm Wishes,

Shanon
