Hello Anonymous,

There is a great deal of buzz about gluten and gluten free diets.

Gluten is a protein found in grains, such as wheat, barley and rye.

Most people tolerate gluten. However, gluten causes inflammation in the small intestines of individuals with celiac disease. For these people, a gluten free diet helps them control their symptoms and prevent complications.

Some individuals have a gluten sensitivity. They do not test positive for celiac disease but still have an allergic type reaction to gluten. Gluten sensitivity does not damage the small intestine. Gastrointestinal symptoms, such as diarrhea, stomach upset, abdominal pain, and bloating, are hallmarks of both celiac disease and gluten sensitivity. People with gluten sensitivity can experience fatigue and headaches.

It is a misconception that a gluten free diet helps with other conditions and with weight loss. Eliminating gluten containing products from your diet can be very unhealthy, leading to nutrient deficiency.

Regards,
Maryann
