Ear infections are common in infants and children. The eustachian tubes connect the middle ear to the back of the throat. The tubes help the ears drain fluid.
Eustachian tubes become easily clogged with fluid in young children, because their tubes are shorter and straighter and more easily blocked than in older children and adults.
Fluid in the ear can lead to an ear infection, also called acute otitis media.
