Dear Anonymous,

While your son MAY have internal hemorrhoids if he strains a lot to go to the bathroom and is frequently constipated, blood in the stool is not something to go based on assumptions. He needs to find a Gastroenterologist and have a physical exam. The doctor will be able to tell him immediately whether or not this is or can be caused by hemorrhoids and whether he may need further testing such as a Colonoscopy or Endoscopy.

Although I am not a doctor one thing I can tell you is that if the blood or his stool are dark, it is not caused by hemorrhoids. Excessive drinking and smoking are also a red flag for the GI/GU doctor and he may want to look further into the bleeding.
