You may want to search out an Obstetrician you are comfortable with now, unless you plan to work with your GP throughout a possible pregnancy. An Obstetrician is trained to care for the unique needs of a pregnant woman (including diabetes), so it may be a good thing for you, especially if your GP isn't the most communicative (from what you've said).
