When you are in a local relationship, it's easy to spend all your time DOING. In a long-distance relationship, there's got to be a lot of COMMUNICATING: I have talked more in a few months to my LDR than I did in the year-plus that I dated my ex-husband -- it was always "let's see a movie", "let's go to a concert", "let's have s*x", let's do anything EXCEPT talk so you don't find out what a rotter I am. Hence, I know my LDR as a person -- know what he thinks and how he thinks and what he thinks of other people's actions. And that's a lot more important to the success of a relationship than whether you can sit silently next to each other at the movies!
