Bipolar disorder can range from moderate levels of depression and mania to a debilitating condition that destroys lives. Those suffering from the most severe forms of the disorder may be unable to help themselves because of cognitive and neurological impairments. I've seen responsible, hard-working, intelligent people lose everything because medication failed to stabilize them. They lost the capacity to manage their lives in any way. It wasn't a matter of choice to eat right, exercise, or maintain self-discipline.
