This matches my experience - deep pain when I lie on my side, relieved by lying on my back with my knees apart ("frog" position, I guess you'd call it.) I'm going to look up "revenge of the piriformis", which sounds like the most likely thing to me. This doesn't act like bursitis or sciatica. Doctors will give their best guess, but often have gaps in their knowledge; doing your own research is important, as you're the most invested in solving the problem. . .
