The HPV virus has been around for decades so it's nothing new. It can also remain dormant for decades. It is likely that the precancerous cells seen back in the 90's were indeed caused by HPV since 99.7% of cervical cancers are attributed to high risk HPV (80% by HPV types 16, 18 and 33). There is no way to know if you husband has been unfaithful as this also may be a reason for exposure to a new strain which resulted in an active infection. However, before you jump to that conclusion communication is the key here. There is no test, per se, for men for HPV which is why most men pass it on unknowingly. Most men also have no symptoms of high risk HPV. If your husband indicates he has been faithful it is not unreasonable that your HPV from that long ago has become reactivated especially if you are over 40. Mine did after 15 years of dormancy. This is indeed a stressful time so please try to cultivate your husband's support if the issue of fidelity is not a concern.
