Hate to weigh in so late, but this may be something to give review of. I've had ongoing problems with knees and stiffness, eventually couldn't stoop, and developed damage at L5/S1. It causes stiffness which in turn causes other symptoms and eventually grows painful, as muscles stop allowing normal motion, and motion decreases, adding to discomfort and pain. I am very close to Knee replacement, and the orthopedic surgeon was scratching his head about tight ACL(s) and Hamsting(s), and after learning I had sleep apnea and Back damage he really backed off knee surgery, as when I told him I was wanting to get the mobility back, he was 100 % sure the back was causing stiffness, not the knee(s). Sleep Apnea can contribute also for lack of oxygen to legs during sleep.
