The AACE (2005) recommends the self exam for several categories of thyroid patients or these of risk groups called “Thyroid neck check”:
“stand in front of the mirror;
have a light source on the side
tilt your head back
watch/feel your neck while swallowing
if you see/feel hard lumps you may have nodule;
If mass disappears as you stretching your neck or not moving while you are swallowing, this is not thyroid related”
