Dr. Sanderson shares the symptoms and warning signs of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Dr. Sanderson:
Well the symptoms of COPD are fairly subtle and often people ignore them in the early stages but chronic cough, particularly cough with production of sputum, mucous secretion and bringing up the sputum and shortness of breath with exercise. And those, many people ignore those symptoms early on and say, “Well I have a cigarette cough.” Well, that’s often a clue that that individual should be tested with breathing test to make that diagnosis.

Now often times the shortness of breath is attributed, “Well, I am a little out of shape”, but the shortness of breath with exercise is a manifestation that also ought to be investigated.

Women or any patient should tell their physician if they are experiencing chronic cough, if they are short of breath with exercise. If they think they have exposures in the work place or because of atmospheric pollution in the air she should share that information with her physician.
