In the spring of 2005, I was recovering from chronic fatigue syndrome-induced vertigo. A few months before, I thought I was having a stroke.

I couldn't drive and I couldn't walk very far. I was restless and needed the fresh air and sun. I especially needed to see something that was not the inside of my house.

We live in a nice, quiet subdivision, but the problem was it took me 10 minutes just to get to the outskirts. And if all I could handle was a 20 minute walk -- Well! Do the math, right? I was never going to get out of this neighborhood. And the claustrophobia was suffocating me. I needed OUT of here.

Alan said he would drive me to whatever part of town I wanted so I could go for a 20 minute walk. He would go do his errands or shopping, or just go for a drive, and then he would prowl the streets in the vicinity and pick me up and then drive me back home.

He did this every day that spring. That is to say, every day where the weather was halfway decent, and when I was up to going for a walk.

Is that love, or what?

Over a couple of months, I got steadier and went for longer walks, eventually heading out on my own. I had very little else to do at that time, being pretty much a mental vegetable. I made dinners and took care of the laundry, but Al did everything else. So I had nothin' but time to go for walks in the sun and get ... stronger.

And that's how I spent my summer vacation.

I spent 15 years losing the battle against CFS. Two years ago, I found treatment that worked for me, and now I am making a comeback.
